5 Things to Consider When Hiring a Graphic Designer

I wanted to share a few of my ideas about what to look for in a graphic designer, because in all transparency, I’m not the best designer for every job, brand, or company. You might need something totally different than what I can provide. Additionally, I wanted to mention a couple of things that could serve as warning signs to you as you shop around for a designer that is the best fit.

1. Find a graphic designer whose aesthetic jives with your brand’s vibe.

One thing to note is that there are two types of designers 1) someone who clients hire for their unique style 2) a graphic designer who will bend (albeit still have a style) to create a unique brand just for you. Both are right. Both have pros and cons. A good designer will tell you when their style isn’t a good fit for you.

2. A good designer charges industry standards.

There is a reason why Fiverr and Upwork are outrageously cheap. There may be a time when this is the best choice for you. However, beware of the risk. I have had clients who are not ultimately happy with the work or received a logo that was plagiarized. Good designers will reference what others charge in order to not dilute the market and even reference books like the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines.

3. They will give you original, vector based files or make it clear when they don’t.

This is my personal opinion, and some designers will disagree. However, if you have a low budget a good designer may withhold the originals files in order to meet you at your desired rate, but should tell you this and it should be noted in your contract.

4. A good designer will have you sign a contract.

This is just as much for your protection as theirs. It should outline exactly what your project will entail, payment agreement, what you will receive, what will happen upon cancellation, and who owns the work.

5. Look for a designer who is client centric and will look out for the best interest of your business, not their own.

As mentioned, sometimes you will hire for specifically for a designers style, but even if you do, good designers will fight for what’s best for your business as if they were a part of your company’s team.
